Mme Nathalie's students made frog maracas in order to celebrate spring. They reuse old paint container, which were made from applesauce container, and turned them into musical frogs. A fun way for k-2 students to make music and to recycle at the same time !

Inspired by a Grade 4 student, ‘Shrub Club’ in Smith School has been quite successful. The 10 members of Shrub Club applied to be a member of the club, adopted their own plants and shrubs, and take care of them on a weekly basis. They water them and learned how to transplant them.  At the end of the year, they plan on donating them to local businesses and planting them in the community.

We were sad to discover that many of our badminton racquets are aging. Many of them are losing their grip! Grip tape, that is. They have become hard wooden handles bristling with splinters. Did we throw them out and order new ones?No way! We simply bought some new grip tape and will wrap the handles. Good as new, and a lot cheaper, too.

To celebrate Earth Day 2014, our entire school went to the beach at Anderson Lake and cleaned up the trash. We found flip flops, socks, a shirt, used diaper (ew!), broken surf board, some invasive weeds, beer cans, lost toys, and even some rusty barbed wire.

For this fundraiser, community members bring donations of gently used and re-gifted items to be auctioned off in lots. This is a great way of recirculating unwanted items that might have been thrown out otherwise.

For a spaghetti dinner fundraiser, we requested all diners to bring their own plates and cutlery. This kept 60 paper plates and forks out of the landfill!

A little paper pot ready for planting.

We recycled old Scholastic book order forms and we made them into little plant pots. We used a wooden pot maker. You have a 9cm wide strip of newsprint. You cut it down lengthwise then you roll it around the potmaker, and squish in the bottom of the paper. Then use the bottom of the potmaker to squish it down hard enough for it to keep its shape. Use dirt to fill the pots and now you are ready...
