We began work on our outdoor classroom in the fall of 2015 securing funding and planning out what we wanted accomplish. By the fall of 2016 we completed our initial phase of the project. We wanted to turn an underused portion of our school field that held a small grove of trees into an outdoor classroom that our students could learn in.
We planted over 60 plants native to Alberta in the spring of 2016, including 10 trees and 20 shrubs. Student volunteers helped to pick and plant the different trees, shrubs and flowers. Volunteers from staff and the community helped to then place tables and stumps to be used for student seating in the outdoor classroom. Finally staff at our school volunteered to help place large boulders into the area.
This project will continue to evolve as time passes by. The next step is the addition of a door to connect the outdoor classroom to our school's library. We also want to add rain water capture and solar energy capabilities to this space as well.
