Perennial Native Plants Installations

All classes in Oakenwald from K-6 have been involved in culturing perennial plants that are native to Manitoba. We have been learning that to have a sustainable ecosystem, it is important for insects to have native perennials to depend upon for food and shelter. Plants like milkweed are crucial to the population of a particular insect that is not yet extinct but these perennial plants are disappearing from our fields and need to be encouraged to grow to support the insect population. Each class is growing seedlings, learning about where best the perennials will grow, and will plant the seedlings once they are sturdy enough into the right zone of our schoolyard.
