The four CONNECTIONS participants created and presented a project that focused on acceptance and celebrating diversity; this was a puppet show on accepting differences which was showcased with 45 students in two grade 1 classes from different schools,Southview School and River Heights Elementary School. “We thought that by creating a story that the children could relate to (and have a good laugh at), we would be able to effectively come across to them and introduce them to the idea of acceptance at an early age.”The grade ones were engaged throughout and eagerly participated in questions before and after although there was a difference in experiences of being treated differently at the two different schools located in very different areas of the city. CONNECTIONS students observed where there was diversity in culture, language, etc., the children had experienced more “meanness”- even in grade 1. One student commented that: “I think our puppet show was a success and it really impacted the students we performed in front of.” Here is a video of their presentation.
