Be The Change:

The students worked to increase the profile of the International students and the need to integrate more with general population. They prepared a short presentation about themselves and went to several classes to present. They also created a mural in the gymnasium with 36 common positive words translated into 9 different languages.

Be the Change Project: Power of Words

Drumheller ValleyHigh School in Drumheller, Alberta, regularly brings students to participate in the CONNECTIONS Program. Their "Be the Change" project is an eloquently understated, yet highly powerful video which looks at the language we use to marginalize various groups of people, and then provides us with language which teaches us how we can build each other through the power of words.

Be the Change Project

We brought in Rachel's Challenge on May 4th, and an Anti-Homophobia day on May 3rd. Rachel's Challenge was split into junior high and senior high groups, as well as a meeting open for everyone in the community to come to at 7:30 pm on May 4th at DVSS.

As well as the presenter there was a banner which was put out after the presentation for the students to sign if the decided to accept Rachel's Challenge which was basically just to be kind to everyone, and to set goals for themselves and follow them.

The goal was to reduce the bullying in our school, and to increase the amount of self-respect students have towards each other through hearing the story of Rachel Joy Scott who was the first person killed in the Columbine shooting.
