Be the Change Project: 'Student Empowerment & Acceptance Week'
Students presented a video in Homeroom on the Monday preceding the week. The video demonstrated the values and goals of the Acceptance Week. During this Homeroom presentation, each student received a colorful piece of paper to write positive messages on. These messages were then strung in the link, so students could be reminded to be positive and accepting while walking to their class. During this week, cookie grams were also sold. These cookies grams helped spread positivity for our project because one cookie was for the buyer and the other was sent to their friend of choice in homeroom on May 13th.
Student organizer's also tried to develop a strong sense of community in their school by holding various recreational and intramural activities during lunch hour on Wednesdays. Activities such as, "What would you do for a Klondike Bar?", Lip Sync and Dance Competitions were highlights. The project attracted large groups of students and developed a sense of school pride and connection.
Be the Change Project: 'Look at Yourself!'
Other students ventured to East Lake Middle School and presented to Grade 8 classes about self-image and confidence. The team of students incorporated activities which included various activities strengthening their message. In the final activity groups of 8-10 would be formed and they would write nice things about the person they were matched up with. Personal stories and a short video were also shown to enhance the presentation.
