Be the Change Project: 'Personal Diversity'

The students prepared a pre-presentation for the school to introduce the idea of personal diversity to students. The student organizers asked teachers to start the conversation with a specific thought provoking video. The following week, students brought Alison Springer in to tie the ideas together.

The student's pre-presentation can be found here.

The thought provoking video, I am NOT Black, you are NOT White, can be found here.

Impact: 450 Grade 7 to 12 students

Past Be the Change Projects

In their "Be the Change" project, Assumption students recruited all of the teachers to help them distribute their messages about discrimination, racism, and stereotyping. They developed a series of videos along with teaching notes, which the teachers then showed in their classes with appropriate preamble, and then hosted discussions with their classes after viewing the video. Two of their short videos are presented below

Fall 2011

Be the Change Project:

The students created a PowerPoint presentation and presented it to everyone at the school.  The topics were about the things that were learned at camp, and to raise awareness in the school. eg. Sexual orientation, bullying, discrimination, and racism. They also made their own version of the “Slang Revolution”. The focus for the younger grades was on discrimination and slang and for the older grades more like the sexuality and the challenges older students face.

The CONNECTIONS students presented in groups of 2 (making 4 presentation groups) in order to present to smaller numbers of students at one time, and making more room for interactions and activities.

The presentation can be found here.
